2. No Cartotecnica Mara product is labelled as “carbon neutral”, “zero impact”
or “100% eco-friendly” through emissions offsetting.

The environmental claims on this website refer exclusively to the characteristics specified in the relevant product data sheet and not to the company’s entire activity, unless expressly stated otherwise.
1. Definitions: “Assessed as recyclable” means a product whose recyclability has been assessed using the Aticelca® MC 501:2023 method. The level achieved (A+ for phenol-free thermal paper) indicates compatibility with the paper recycling process in standard facilities. The assessment concerns the thermal paper only, excluding core, packaging and non-paper components.
2. Evidence and certifications: Every environmental claim is supported by independent third-party documentation, available on the Environmental Transparency page. In particular:
- Aticelca® recyclability certificate No. 11130-0015 of 04-02-2026 issued by Aticelca – verify at www.aticelca.it
- Phenol-free report (BPA/BPS) No. INERIS-232703-283555
- FSC® certification, where applicable: License code FSC-C107026 – verify at info.fsc.org
3. What we do NOT claim: Unless otherwise specifically stated together with the relevant certification system, our products are not labelled as “100% eco-friendly”, “zero impact”,
“carbon neutral” or “compostable”. The logos, colours and graphic symbols used do not in themselves constitute a sustainability label under Article 18 of the Italian Consumer Code.
4. Regulatory compliance: Thermal rolls comply with EU Regulation 2016/2235 (BPA <0.02%). This compliance is a legal requirement and is not presented as a distinctive environmental feature.
5. Update: The environmental information is updated as of 08/2026. Actual recyclability depends on the separate waste collection procedures established by the municipality of residence and on the efficiency of local facilities.

Environmental Labelling of Packaging and Products
Since 1 January 2023, all packaging must be labelled in accordance with the applicable UNI technical standards. Below are the disposal instructions for Cartotecnica Mara S.r.l. products and packaging, broken down by product line to ensure transparency under Italian Legislative Decree No. 30 of 20 February 2026 against greenwashing.
Disposal Codes by Material
Our company indicates on the outside of its packages how the packaging should be disposed of. In detail, here are the disposal methods:

The recyclability of the phenol-free thermal paper was assessed using the Aticelca® MC 501:2023 method. Result: Level A+ – Recyclable with paper.
Aticelca® grant No. 11130-0015 of 04-02-2026, issued to Koehler Italia Srl for the phenol-free KT 55 PF thermal paper produced by Koehler Paper SE – publicly verifiable at www.aticelca.it. The assessment concerns the thermal paper only, excluding core and packaging.

The codes follow the European standard and are identical throughout the country, but the practical disposal methods vary from municipality to municipality: always check the correct disposal methods for packaging and products with your municipality.
2026 Update: EU Regulation 2025/40 (PPWR)
In addition to the obligations already in force, from 12 August 2026 the EU Regulation 2025/40 (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation – PPWR) will apply, introducing a single, stricter European framework for the environmental labelling of packaging, intended to run alongside and eventually replace the national regulations currently in force.
The main changes:
- Limits on hazardous substances: from 12 August 2026, stricter thresholds come into force for PFAS (maximum 25 ppb for a single substance, 250 ppb for the total sum) and for total fluorine (max 50 ppm), as well as limits on heavy metals such as lead and cadmium (max 100 mg/kg) for materials used in packaging.
- Harmonised European label: by 2026 the European Commission will define the technical specifications of the single EU label and of digital marking systems (e.g. QR codes) to identify materials and substances.
- Mandatory harmonised label: this will become mandatory from 12 August 2028, directly affecting how manufacturers – including Cartotecnica Mara – will have to communicate the composition of their packaging.
For companies in the sector, this means that the current coding system (Decision 97/129/EC) will not disappear overnight, but will be flanked and later replaced by a single European label that is easier for end consumers to read. Cartotecnica Mara is monitoring the evolution of the regulation to ensure its packaging remains compliant with every deadline.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is environmental labelling mandatory for all packaging?
Yes, the obligation covers all packaging placed on the Italian market – primary, secondary and tertiary – regardless of material (paper, plastic, wood, glass, metal).
What changes with EU Regulation 2025/40 compared to current legislation?
The PPWR introduces a harmonised label at European level (mandatory from 2028) and new limits on substances such as PFAS and heavy metals (in force from 12 August 2026), running alongside and eventually replacing the current coding system based on Decision 97/129/EC.
How do I know which recycling bin to use for a package?
The code shown on the packaging (e.g. PAP22 or PAP20 for paper, PS6 or PVC3 for plastic, FOR40 for wood) indicates the material family, but the practical disposal methods depend on your municipality’s separate waste collection regulations: always check with your municipality. Please note: not all paper-based materials are recyclable as paper – for example, thermal paper must be disposed of as general waste.

Yes, Cartotecnica Mara has indicated disposal codes on the outer label of its packages since 01/01/2022, ahead of the legal requirement, and is following the evolution of EU Regulation 2025/40 to remain compliant with upcoming deadlines.
