ESG CERTIFICATION

ESG certification and packaging sustainability: PackInPro by Mara Cartotecnica

Mara Cartotecnica Srl, a paper converting company based in Val Brembilla (BG), Italy, obtained the PackInPro – Packaging Sustainability Certification in 2025, issued by the certification body My Cert with the scientific support of the Institute for Transformative Innovation Research of the University of Pavia. Certificate no. 20260001 attests to the company’s commitment to environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria applied across the entire paper packaging production process.

What are ESG certifications in the paper and packaging industry?

ESG certifications in the paper and packaging industry are attestations issued by independent third-party bodies that verify a manufacturer’s compliance with environmental criteria (responsible use of resources, waste management, emissions), social criteria (worker safety, ethical supply chain) and governance criteria (transparency, regulatory compliance).

In the paper converting sector, where the raw material is a renewable but not unlimited natural resource, ESG certifications allow customers, suppliers and business partners to verify objectively — and not merely on the basis of what is claimed — a company’s real impact along the entire supply chain: from paper sourcing to the management of production waste, through to working conditions in the plant.

The most widespread standards in the industry include forest management certifications (FSC, PEFC), management system certifications (ISO 14001 for the environment, ISO 45001 for safety) and product/process certifications dedicated to packaging such as PackInPro, which specifically assesses the sustainability of packaging as a whole.

What is the PackInPro certification?

PackInPro (Packaging Insight Project) is a sustainability certification dedicated to the packaging sector, issued by the body My Cert with the scientific validation of the Institute for Transformative Innovation Research – University of Pavia. It measures the ESG performance of packaging manufacturers on the basis of environmental, social and governance criteria.

How it works:

  • Annual assessment of the organisation’s ESG performance;
  • annual periodic surveillance to maintain validity;
  • full review of the requirements every three years.

Its academic grounding in an independent university body (University of Pavia) sets PackInPro apart from self-declarations or purely commercial labels, guaranteeing a verifiable assessment method.

Our ESG commitment

The PackInPro certification process is part of Mara Cartotecnica’s broader commitment to the sustainability of paper packaging, which includes:

  • Environment: responsible management of paper raw materials and reduction of processing waste;
  • Social: protecting the safety and well-being of the people working at the Val Brembilla plant, and careful oversight of the supply chain;
  • Governance: transparency towards customers, suppliers and collaborators, including through a dedicated reporting channel.

Ethical reporting channel (whistleblowing)

The ethical reporting channel is the tool that Mara Cartotecnica makes available to customers, suppliers, collaborators and employees to report — in confidence — any conduct that does not comply with the company’s ethical, environmental, social and governance principles.

Who can use it:

  • Employees and internal collaborators;
  • suppliers and sub-suppliers;
  • customers;
  • any other stakeholder in the supply chain.

How to report:

  1. By email to the dedicated address se**********@**************ra.it;
  2. through the dedicated contact form on this page, selecting “Other” as the product category and stating “Ethical report” in the message field.

What to report: breaches of environmental regulations, improper conduct in the management of staff or of the supply chain, irregularities in corporate governance, or any behaviour that conflicts with the ESG principles declared by Mara Cartotecnica.

Reports received are handled confidentially and do not expose the whistleblower to retaliation.
